Network Cabling in South Africa: What IT Managers Need to Know Before the Next Upgrade

The cabling underneath your network determines what the equipment on top of it can do. A R95,000 Cisco Catalyst 9300 with 10G ports connected to Cat5e cable will never deliver more than 1 Gbps. A Wi-Fi 6E access point on a 1G port will bottleneck every wireless client. In South Africa, where network refreshes are often deferred and cabling infrastructure can be 10 to 15 years old, the gap between switch capability and cable capacity is widening. Cable Types at a Glance

Cat5e supports 1 Gbps at 100 metres. It was the standard for a decade but cannot support 10G at any distance. Cat6 supports 10 Gbps but only at runs under 55 metres; beyond that it falls back to 1G silently. Cat6a supports 10 Gbps at the full 100-metre distance and handles higher PoE loads with less heat buildup. Fibre (single-mode) supports 10 Gbps to 100 Gbps over distances up to 40 kilometres. Multi-mode fibre handles the same speeds at shorter distances (300 to 550 metres) and is the standard for in-building backbone runs.

Cat7 appears in some product catalogues but is not recognised by TIA/EIA standards and uses proprietary connectors instead of RJ45. For most South African deployments it is not worth considering. Cat6a is the practical copper ceiling. Anything beyond that goes to fibre.

What South African Businesses Should Install in 2026

The recommended approach is a hybrid: fibre backbone between floors and buildings, Cat6a from distribution switches to endpoints. This matches how enterprise networks are actually built. Core switches with fibre uplinks connect to distribution switches, which connect to access switches with Cat6a copper downlinks serving desks, IP phones, wireless APs and cameras.

According to ISO/IEC 11801, the international standard that South African installations follow, structured cabling should support at least two equipment generations beyond current deployment. Cat6a at 10 Gbps meets that threshold. Cat5e and Cat6 do not.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

Network cabling in South Africa costs approximately R550 to R1,200 per point for commercial installations, depending on complexity. That covers cable, termination, wall plate and basic testing. Fibre drops cost roughly two to three times more due to specialised splicing equipment. Bulk installations of 50 or more points typically attract 15 to 25 percent discounts.

The cable itself is the cheap part. The switches, routers and patch panels that terminate the cable are where the real investment sits. A 48-port PoE+ switch costs R15,000 to R95,000 depending on model and whether it is new or refurbished. Getting the cable wrong means replacing it when the switches are upgraded, doubling the labour cost. Getting it right the first time means the cable outlasts two or three switch generations.

PoE and Cabling: The Connection Most People Miss

Every PoE device draws power through the data cable. Higher power means more heat in the cable. Cat5e and Cat6 have higher DC resistance than Cat6a, which means more voltage drop over distance and more heat in cable bundles. A 48-port PoE++ switch pushing 60 to 90 watts per port through Cat5e cable in a packed conduit generates enough heat to degrade performance and reduce cable lifespan. Cat6a’s lower resistance handles high-power PoE with less heat buildup, which also extends UPS runtime during load shedding.

Five Signs It Is Time to Recable

Consistent slow speeds despite switch upgrades. Frequent dropped connections or poor VoIP quality. Cat5e or older cable installed more than 10 years ago. Deploying Wi-Fi 6E or 6 access points that need multi-gig uplinks. Moving to 10G switch infrastructure where the ports are 10G but the cable bottlenecks at 1G.
